My 1st Photo Shoot!!!

Hello Divas,

I have been keeping busy lately between my  two careers.  Below are pictures from a photo shoot I have done recently.  I was asked by a local designer(Akosua F-Fashion Designer) who I meet while assisting for Fashion In Detroit to do makeup for a photo shoot.  So I jumped at the opportunity.  You can get a feel for people when you first meet them and know if you can have a working relationship with them.  Akosua is professional, down to earth and cool to work with.  She also has some fabulous designs.  She has a suit I need once I lose some more weight. The photos are untouched.

I received this through a blog sale and I have to say I love this product.  I wanted to try it out and also use in my kit.  I tested the product on myself and also used it for my first photo shoot.  The model was a little lighter than me and it worked perfectly.  The color did not change on me or the model.  The shoot was for less than 10 hours so I can not verify if it lasted for 15 hours on the model and I usually wear foundation for 12 hours or less.  It did last for 12 hours on me with no color change.  It does not provide heavy coverage as stated by the description, but since I don't need heavy coverage it works great for me.  As far as my kit, this product works great.  Ninety percent of the models I have worked on don't need heavy coverage... maybe medium.  I actually prefer creams and then liquid foundations.  As far as MAC foundations... full coverage is still my favorite for myself and my kit. I also like to mix my foundations instead of purchasing the whole range of colors. Pro Longwear has a decent color range that I can work with.

IMATS Toronto 2010 Series Part 6: Day 2

Day 2 at IMATS was very educational and shorter.  As soon as I walked in the door I headed straight to hear and see KJ Bennett.  He was represented by Yaby Cosmetics this day and explained "you have to love doing doing makeup, you will make mistakes and you will learn and grow from them."  His whole kit he was using fit into a messenger bag.  He showed us six palettes that held his eye shadows, blush, bronzers, press powders and creme foundations.  He also stated it is best to use a self setting makeup remover in the eye area so that the makeup will not slide off.  He was using Embroylisse.  He also showed that using a flat top brush like MAC 212 brush... wiggling it along the lash line creates fuller looking lashes.  He also mainly added powder to the T-zone.  He created a gorgeous look for the holidays.

I stayed at the same stage to see what Stila's Dominick Briguglio had to show us.  His workshop started with models walking around the audience and one to the stage showing us the looks from the face charts that were placed in the seats with an eyeshadow.  He discussed the One Step products that Stila has come out with and applied them to another model while explaining the products to us.  One step correct only comes in 8 shades so it does not cover the darkest complexions(SMH).  The products look good on the model.  I just hope they come out with a wider color range of foundations for women of color.

I skipped out a little early to check out David Klasfeld of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics.  He had a lot of great information also.  He advised 12-20 max psi for compressor and that you should not constantly run your compressor at the highest psi due to you can burn it out faster.  He also advised on holding off on the powder so you don't get powder build up on clients especially on camera.  He stated we need to learn to control the shine from within(during priming the skin).  Also when asked about doing detailed work with an airbrush... he stated fine detailed work is better by hand.

Roque Cozzette was the last presenter I saw of the day due to I had to get back to the USA early.  He talked about Cracking Couture: what you should and should not do in the fashion industry.  He advised assisting out MUAs, finding a photographer whose pics you like(makeup wise) and while backstage don't hand out business cards while assisting and don't over step boundaries.  If you are a great assistant you will get recognized and gain more jobs.  He also mentioned that while assisting under another MUA's name/company it is best not to use the images from the event on you website, etc... because they are the recognized artist of the event, etc.  Many times we want recognition and to rise quickly up the ladder, but some times you have to wait your turn.  Be patient and work hard because one day you can be the MUA with assistants. I learned that also from his presentation.  People see the work we do, but we have to go through the proper channels also.  :)

I also saw the student showcase before I left.  The artist did some fabulous work.  As far as products, I mainly purchased brushes.  NYX is cheaper state side and so was NARS.  Being on the budget that I am on, I basically picked up what I needed... more brushes.  I am still deciding on an airbrush system also, but plan to get Temptu and/or OCC.  I still plan to get some Yaby shadows/palettes and more brushes.  I am already making a list for future shows.  I also wished I had the time to see Eve Pearl and Tom Savini.  Tom Savini is a wonderful actor, makeup artist and he founded the Tom Savini Special Effects Makeup program.  I loved him in From Dusk 'Til Dawn.  I hope I get a chance to see him and Eve Pearl at another show.  More pictures and videos to come on Youtube.  Overall a great 2 days of makeup that I must repeat yearly at least.  :)

Review: Ebay 120 palette

Hey Divas,

I decided to try one of the 120 eyeshadow palettes for my kit.  I ordered one off of Ebay for .99 plus $14.89 shipping which totaled 15.88.  Not a bad price for 120 shadows and one of the lower prices on ebay when shipping was included.   The Seller:Member id fusenelectronic ( Feedback Score Of 21281Yellow shooting star icon for feedback score in between 10,000 to 24,499) eBay Store.
It breaks down to 13 cents per shadow. It was shipped on October 28, 2010 from Hong Kong and I received it on November 18, 2010.  I received it in great condition.  It was packaged very well.  It came in an envelope, with styrofoam casing and bubble wrap.  Each 60 eyeshadow tray was wrapped individually inside the main palette.  They made sure nothing would be broken during shipping.  I like the packaging.  It is just small and condensed enough to fit in my kit and also at most work stations.  If I want access to all the shadows I can just put one tray each side for access.

Now on to the shadows...  As far as ingredients, there is nothing listed.  I did not receive a box but from my research online it MAY contain Talcum powder , Kaolin , Mica powder , Magnesium Stearate , Titanium White Powder , Colorant , and PearlLustre Pigment.  Other 120 palettes that are identical have these listed as ingredients but I still can not verify that they are the same.

I always try items on myself before adding to my kit.  I have allergies and try to make sure I cover all clients(sensitive skin to normal). The shadows do not irate my skin.  The shadows are smooth and creamy in texture but are not highly pigmented when used with UDPP.  They look more sheer.  I used NYX jumbo sticks and MAC Paint Pots on different occasions and the colors were more vibrant.  I also had to pack on more color than I do with my other shadows such as MAC, UD, NARS and  MUFE.  They also seem to wear ok and are a bit chalky.  I applied the shadows at 9 am and by 12 noon(1pm), I noticed creasing in the crease with the paint pot even though the colors are still vibrant.  At 5pm I noticed that the colors were almost off my eyes(not a good sign).  Overall I think it will be okay for my kit(use for a short shoot) due to the variety of colors and since I have the NYX Jumbo sticks and  MAC Paint Pots to compensate for the sheerness of the colors.  I don't plan to purchase another one.  Yaby cosmetics has shadows about the same size and have better pigmentation.  Yaby cost more but it is worth it due to less product/time is used to achieve a great look.  The 120 palette will never replace my MAC, NARS, MUFE, UD, etc. due to the fact they last longer and I have to use less product to get a better look on my clients.  When you have 15 minutes to make up a client or model this product may not work to achieve the best look. I feel it also is not the best if you do not have the option for a lot of touch ups.

IMATS Toronto 2010 Series Part 5

Beauty Thesis and I

My main reason for going to IMATS Toronto was the workshops. While checking out some of the booths, I noticed I can get some things like NYX for cheaper in the US due to bogo sales, etc.  I still don't understand why as the US dollar has dropped compared to other countries like Canada, that the prices have not changed for those countries.  You would think that the prices would be comparable, but Canadians still have to pay more for MAC, NYX and some other brands.  I think that is unfair especially since MAC is a Canadian brand.  Reason I plan to wait until The Makeup Show Chicago and IMATS NYC to purchase some products that I really don't need right now but plan to get for my kit.  So off to more workshops....

The next workshop I attended was Nadine Luke, Director of Makeup Artistry at MAC Cosmetics.  She held a workshop on Fall/Winter runway trends.  We watched a short video of behind the scenes of some runway shows showing the trends and then she discussed the trends.  The four trends mentioned are:

Redd Velvet- Red lips of all colors...
Satin Eyes - liner, soft washes of color, brown smokey eyes, etc.
Voi Ve Veil - Gothy, Graphic, Art Forms...
Cashmink- skin

She also stated tools make a difference.  Quality tools were mentioned at almost all workshops.  She also created the trends on a model.

Next workshop I attended was Perfecting Each Brush Stroke with Koren of Enkore Makeup.  He is just as wonderful in person as he is on Youtube.  Pursebuzz was his model. Koren also stressed having quality tools and priming/moisturizing the client/model.  He gave out some excellent tips.  Checkout www.beautylish.com  for those tips.  Koren makeup tips.  Christina has some detailed information.

I actually meet her and ? at Koren's workshop.  It was great meeting her and ?.  They even gave me a Beautylish tee which I love.

I also finally meet in person one of my favorite bloggers and youtubers Beauty Thesis.  It was cool  meeting and hanging with her.  Her makeup was looking fabulous as usually. Before the day ended I also got a chance to meet Enkore.

IMATS Toronto 2010 Series Part 4

My 1st IMATS was great.  It took about 4 hours to get to Mississauga, ON Canada(suburb of Toronto).  I arrived Friday evening and checked into my hotel.  My mom and I decided to drive around and check the area out.  I decided to checkout the MAC Pro in the area.  The MAC Pro in Chicago is the closest one to me besides the one on Queen Street.  I finally got a chance to see The Bay store also.  It is very nice.  The whole mall was gorgeous.  I love the way it is designed.  I also love the food court being on the upper level.

MAC Pro store is very nice even thougt I didn't get a chance to see the area where the pro products are located.  I will have to do that next time.  I noticed that one of the MUAs in the store had on some fabulous looking makeup.  We were walking thru and I didn't a chance to find out what colors she had on.

The next day I work up early and arrived at the show around 8:30 am.  The parking lot had at least 30-40 cars on the side that  I entered.  Lines were already formed to pick up tickets.  As soon I walked in, I saw the fabulous Deepa Berar.  She has a great blog and Youtube channel.  She looks just as fab in person as she does in her videos and is so nice.  I entered into the show and headed straight for MUFE.  I had to see what deals they had.  The booth was already crowded and it wasn't even 9:00am yet, lol.  I didn't purchase anything from MUFE.  I have enough for now, but I should have bought the flash palette.  It was only $62 and I may never find it again unless on ebay way over priced.

I checked out all the other booths, and tested some products at Temptu while watching Dani Fonseca do a demo on a potential customer.  Dani looked like she had no foundation on(She had on Temptu of course) and her skin looked flawless.  MAC Pro was not selling any products, but they were signing up people for the Pro discount card on site and talking about the student kits.  You could actually go to the local Pro store and purchase products the same day with the discount!  The MUA I saw the previous day was there.  I headed over to Crown brush booth and purchased a few brushes for my kit before heading to hear my 1st speaker.  I didn't plan to see Kandee Johnson speak because she was having a Youtube Guru Q&A.  I was at the show mainly for skills and technique workshops.  I decided to get in the long line to hear her speak because I do like her channel and personality.  I am glad I did.

Kandee mentioned she condensed her kit down to her Zuca and normally carries 5 foundations and concealer to get rid of redness.  She was asked who was her favorite MUAs and of course Kevyn Aucoin, Scott Barnes, and Topolino was named.  She likes artist who think outside the box.  Makeup is an art form, fun and has no rules to her.  I agree with her view on makeup and her favorite MUAs.  She gave an inspiring speech and then had a meet and greet at Makeup Artist Magazine booth where she was giving away Cover FX, Dinar Airbrush and many other items.

I had to look up Topolino.
"He is a self-taught, conceptual, make up artist who hailed from the late 80s.  He has produced influential, visionary work for Alexander McQueen and Philip Treacy. He’s inspired by everything, from trash to insects."

I stayed at the main stage for the next speaker and one of the main reasons I came to IMATS, Kevin James Bennett, award winning makeup artist and author of the website www.inmykit.com.  I made sure I was upfront and center for his workshop.  How many opportunities would I have to hear and see an artist like him live and in person?  Not many... so free giveaways could not move me from my seat.

KJ Bennett as some call him is amazing, down to earth, and loves what he does.  He talked about using quality tools regardless of price(you can find great tools from low to high prices).  He also talked about durable makeup, creating makeup looks that last.  He stated even if the model/client states they have moisturized, etc., it is still best to start with a clean face so that the makeup will be durable/lasting.  He also talked about using the right makeup cleaner to clean up the eye area, etc. so that when applying concealer and foundation later they will not crease.  He used extra primer(Cover FX primer) to remove any fallout, etc.  Even though he his serious about his career in makeup, he stated makeup is fun and we should have fun doing makeup. He explained so much to us while creating a flawless look on the model.

Before the Student Competition Award Show,  I headed over to Royal & Langnickel Brush Mfg. booth to purchase some the brushes he mentioned and were using.  The booth was busy and at first I could not find the brushes I was looking for.  Much to my surprise who walks over to assist me, while he is already assisting others... none other than the man himself, KJ Bennett.  I mention that I was in his workshop and that I was looking for some of the brushes he was using.  He finds all of them for me and even converses for a minute.  It was a great pleasure finally meeting him and being able to sit in not one but two of his workshops.  I hope I get a chance to sit in on a master class that he teaches for the Makeup Show or another IMATS.

Stay tuned for part 5... continuation of  Day 1 of IMATS.....

"Walk" Runway Fashion Show(behind the scenes)

I was asked by my Sands to assist with makeup and whatever else needed to be done for the "Walk" Runway Fashion Show  past Sunday, October 24, 2010.  The show was put on by Iced Crystals and Jelly's World Entertainment and was held at the Charles H. Wright African American Museum in Downtown Detroit.  The show was a great experience.  I was expecting to mainly work behind the scenes assisting with makeup application and being a runner(assisting where needed).  I also was asked to assist with seating people which utilitized my previous skills with customer service and waiting tables.  Knowing how to deal with people are skills everyone needs.

I began the day running backstage to make sure all the models were made up by the main MUAs.  I also got a chance to assist a MUA, Ambrose who I find to be a great photographer.  I first met him during the Salon Showcase for Detroit Fashion Week.  I learned that he also does hair and makeup.  It was great assisting and watching him work because I learned so much.  He showed me a different way of applying foundation and also a different way of contouring and highlighting the face.  I have been applying my own foundation different because of what he has shown me.  He also made me work on an area I need to improve, lash application.  I would love to assist him again.

I also meet some other MUAs that I hope to do more networking with.  They all did a fabulous job on all the models and  LaShana Boyd- Lawson did a great job as head Makeup Artist.

LaShana

Aisha Brewer was the Executive Assistant of the show.  My Sands Aisha Brewer makeup was done by LaShana and dress by her mom.  She looked fabulous.

Fashion In Detroit Spring/Summer 2011

Hello Divas,

I am still here.  I have just been very busy with Fashion Shows.  I love being behind the scenes doing makeup.  This past weekend I assisted with Fashion in Detroit(FID) co-founded by Joe Faris of Project Runway Season 5.  I assisted doing makeup for both days of the show(October 22-23, 2010).  The show was held at Soundboard in Motor City Casino Hotel(Downtown Detroit).  FID partnered with Michigan based Forgotten Harvest who main goal is to tackle hunger and waste.  A portion of the proceeds from the shows will benefit Forgotten Harvest.   To keep this article short, below is the link to the website for more information on FID:     http://www.fashionindetroit.com/

Quote from site:

"Fashion In Detroit is a bi-annual two-day fashion event created by Project Runway’s Joe Faris to put a fashion spotlight on Detroit and create a venue that fills the needs of many locally based designers and the Detroit fashion community. FID’s Executive Committee is made up of the area’s heaviest hitters in fashion, beauty and event management, who are committed to creating a fashion extravaganza to rival other Fashion Weeks around the U.S."

Show Schedule Day 1 included Designers:

Adriana Pavon
Geftaki  / Julie Lindsay
Student Show
English Laundry Presented by Showtime Clothing
Ines Di Santo
Peter Hidalgo

Show Schedule Day 2 included Designers:

Femilia Couture
Christiane Larue by Bonnie Foley
Moosejaw
Heike Jarick
Prophetik by Jeff Garner
Motor City Denim Co. by Joe Faris

FID also has a Designer Competition for talented fashion designers who don't get enough recognition for their work.  The winning designer of the competition is guaranteed a spot in the next FID event.  Checkout the website for more information for the next competition.

The main person I worked for indirectly of the Executive Committee was Rino, the founder and owner of  Figo Salon in Birmingham, Michigan.  Rino made sure hair and makeup ran smoothly during the show.  Estee Lauder was the Makeup Sponsor and gave us some wonderful products to use.  Lead/Head MUAs were Amanie Mokdad and Gysta Nuculaj.  Both are fabulous artists and leaders with wonderful personalities.  They were great to work for and they made sure makeup was flawless with the help of their team of Makeup Artists which included moi. We truly worked as a team to get all the models looks completed.  I worked with a wonderful group of talented Makeup Artists with a wealth of knowledge.  Each designer had their own looks from a hot smokey eye to an 80's vibe. The face charts were gorgeous and when we did the looks on the models they looked even more fabulous especially with the great hairstyles that were created.

It was fast paced and a great learning experience.  Some skills I improved due to my involvement with this show include brows, tag team makeup, pace of applying makeup, blending, etc.  There is always more to learn and ways to grow.  I didn't get any pictures because I was busy assisting(barely had time to eat).  I hope to be a part of the next show and maybe I will have some behind the scenes pictures for you all.

I may do some of the looks and post them here and on YouTube when I get a chance.....

IMATS Toronto 2010 Series Part 2

Afternoon my Divas.  I have begun to finalize my plans for IMATS Toronto in November.  For those who don't know what IMATS is... checkout part 1 from last month.  As a Makeup Artist I want to present myself in the best light.  So I prefer to be prepared. I have ordered new business cards that I feel will be more professional.  I have also begun to put my portfolio together for the Afterglow(great place to network).  Update on the afterglow below:

"The Afterglow will begin at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6 at Canyon Creek - Airport, which is located at 25 Carlson Ct., just west of the Toronto Congress Centre. The restaurant offers a diverse menu of prime rib, rack of lamb, cedar plank salmon, double pork chops and more, and features cocktails, Belgian draughts and a wide assortment of wines. "

So business cards are here and I love them.  I still have to get my pictures printed and portfolio together.  That should be done by the end of the month.  I have a few more fashion shows to do and get 8x10s from.  Hopefully I will have some other jobs to do before then also.  The more faces I paint the happier I am.  My room has been confirmed for the weekend and car has been checked for the drive. I have the days off from work, passport is here and I just need to pack my bags to go.

I have checked out the posted info and I am ready to listen and watch Kevin James Bennett work his magic and tell us how to get "The Complete Complexion", Koren(Enkore Makeup) to tell us how to "Perfect Each Brush Stroke" and OCC's David Klasfeld show us how to "Create HD-Ready, Photo-Friendly Skin using Airbrush Foundation".  I see so many great things to learn.  I plan to be in workshops all day, taking notes and photos/video so I can perfect my skills. I also hope to hang out with some of my Youtube and blog Divas who plan to attend either or both days.

Tickets are still available for  anyone who plans to attend.  The IMATS site is being updated daily.  Check it out.  IMATS Toronto .

Detroit Fashion Week Spring Summer Collections 2011

I had a great time being a part of Detroit Fashion Week Spring Summer Collections 2011.  Even though it started 6 years ago this was my 1st year as a volunteer and Makeup Artist.  I enjoyed being a part of so many aspects of the show.  My previously post was about the launch party so I will tell you all about the rest and post some pictures.

The Salon Showcase occurred at Douglas J. Aveda Institute in Royal Oak, MI.  It was not just about hair and makeup but also about attitude and clothing for the Salon showcase.  The models strutted down the runway posing to showcase the hair mainly but letting us know that the whole package matters... hair, makeup, attitude, walk, and clothes.  Even in our daily lives we want to look good regardless of how much we spend on makeup, hair and clothes.  It doesn't matter how much you spend but the attitude and walk.

The Student Showcase occurred at the Royal Oak Farmers Market where we enhanced the beauty of the models to suite the designs of the clothes. These designs were so gorgeous I forgot I was at a student showcase.  Michigan has some very talented and down to earth student designers who are making an impact on the world of fashion already.  I don't have pictures to post due to being backstage and doing makeup on 3 of the models.  Even though it was my 1st fashion show doing makeup on someone other than myself, I received great feedback and advice from some of the other MUAs at the show.  I also watched and learned the techniques they used.  I also looked at how their kits were set up and what products they used.  It varied from Dinar to Temptu to OCC for airbrush systems with MAC Face and Body being used for some.  I used Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer on one model and use MAC Face and Body on the other two models.  Both products gave the models a gorgeous glow that showed on the runway.  I mainly used various products by Kevyn Aucoin, Benefit, MAC, and MUFE on the models for eyes, cheeks and lips.  The models were so down to earth and great to work with.

The Designer Showcase occurred on Saturday at the Farmers Market also.  This time i was upfront and part of the volunteer group that assisted with setting up the show, assisting during the show and breaking down the show.  I wanted to do makeup also, but that was done at the Aveda Institute and I signed up as a volunteer host for the main showcase.  I am glad I also experienced this side of the show.  As soon as I walked in the door I was ready to work and they put me too work. :)  We set up the chairs for the audience, the runway and assisted with setting up the video equipment.  While I had a short break I had a chance to see the Drag Makeup being done by the fabulous Queens in the show.  I was amazed at the makeup.  I saw some of the best cut creases, contouring and highlighting.  They all did a fabulous job doing their own makeup and the designers of the collection of clothes their wore are amazing.  I love the outfits.  One dress I was ready to buy on the spot.

They started the show after a prayer from a local pastor.  He stated there are many talented people in the cemetery.  He explained that too many people live their lives without living their dreams and then die never knowing what they could have achieved.  I took that message to heart.  The rest of the show was great.  So many beautiful clothes.  I don't own the pictures so here are links to some sites and photographers who took some great pictures of the shows.

DFW Press Launch Party at the Whitney Mansion

Last night I attended Detroit Fashion Week Press Launch Party at the Whitney Mansion sponsored by Uneek Collections. It was a great start to a great week of fashion, makeup and the love of all things creative.  Detroit Fashion Week was created six years ago by Brian Heath and he continues to produce the show.  The idea is to make people aware of Michigan's fashion industry and what it has to offer.

The party was hosted by CW50 Official Detroit Gossip Girl Lauren Turner. The party also featured up and coming recording artist Lewis Hensley of Uneek Music label. He has a wonderful voice and knows how to entertain his audience. We were also entertained by a live DJ throughout the night and a couple of contortionists.

Uneek Collections showed us a new collection of urban designs that anyone can wear and look fabulous in.  They showed new selections of men and ladies clothes to wear from classic shirts to hooded tops.  The models makeup were great.... of course that is mainly what I was focused on. Accessories were also modeled from the Jenna Kator Collection of Women Designer Handbags.  She has some fantastic styles from the everyday to a night out on the town.

The press party was a chance to network and have fun. I did a little of both and can't wait for what's to come the rest of the week.  Below is a couple of pictures I took in one of the rooms in the mansion.

New York may be the fashion capital, but Michigan also has great talent, designers, photographers, makeup artists and models who love what they do.  Check out http://www.uneekcollection.com/  for their clothing, etc. and  http://www.detroitfashionweek.com/  for more information on designers, sponsors and more.

IMATS Toronto 2010 Series Part 1

Living in Michigan, we don't have many opportunities nearby for Makeup Trade Shows, etc. that don't require being a certified professional MUA, student, photographer, etc.  If you are already in the business with comp sheets, letters of recommendations, license, etc. then you have the credentials for most shows, and classes. Getting the necessary on the job training, being mentored by someone, and having the products for your kit doesn't happen overnight unless you have the funds to travel to the classes and people who can help you make your dreams of being a certified working MUA a reality.

For those of us who are just starting out , who have to keep our current jobs to pay the bills, and want to network, learn some new skills, and purchase some products for our kit from brands that can't be found in local stores, IMATS Toronto is the place to be. International Makeup Artist Trade Show hosted by Makeup Artist Magazine will be in Toronto, ON in November 2010 for the 2nd year and this will be my 1st time going. It will be at the Toronto Congress Centre on November 6-7, 2010. There will be workshops, exhibits, various people to network with that are doing well in the industry and many products to purchase at a discount.

Makeup Magazine was created in 1996 by Emmy® Award-winning make-up artist Michael Key out of a desire to keep MUA's informed. IMATS was 1st held in August 1997 in Los Angeles, CA to educate and connect MUA's all over the world. Currently it has expanded to 6 shows in 4 countries throughout the year. New York has been added at the newest show in April 2011(I would love to go to this one too).

Any trip I take to conventions, shows, etc. that are out of town, I always do my research. I like to know what is in the area such as restaurants, shopping, and other places of interest. Currently I am doing my research on the brands that will be there so that I will have an idea of the products I would like to purchase. Having a list makes it easier to so that you don't forget something you may really want and to avoid shipping cost if you have to order it online later. I have also checked out the restaurants in the area so that I can try a new one for dinner or lunch while I am there. I hope to see you there. :)

Tickets are on sale now.  Get them now while they are lower. Check out "www.imatsshow.com" for full information on IMATS and links to Makeup Artist Magazine and more.

IMATS is produced by Make-Up Artist magazine.

Update, Opportunities, and Life

Hello Divas!

I have been working hard lately.  I have some projects in the works for September and plan to do more tutorials series for September and November.  I just ordered more Sugarpill Cosmetics. So tutorials and swatches are on the way.  I am currently doing my best to create opportunities and volunteer for other opportunities so I can get the experience I need and want.  .  People sometimes wait for things to happen in their lives.  Most of the times you have to search and go beyond your normal limits to reach your goals.  Step out side your box and see what you can do.  I have a degree in Computer Information Systems, but currently I am working as a recruiter.  It is outside my box but it has broaden my skills and my knowledge.

MAC, Rodarte and the Controversy Part #2

Love what MAC has done even though they did not have to give all proceeds from the Rodarte collection.  Sad to see that so many still are complaining that it is not enough.  No matter how much you try to fix a mistake you can not please everyone and shouldn't try to.  It is interesting that many who are complaining will expect MAC to do all the donating, but will never donate themselves. They will never go to a women's shelter to help or serve food to the homeless, etc. They will get back in their bubbles and forget this ever happen.  They will forget in a month, 3 months, 6 months or further down the road.  Sad but true. We expect people to forgive us when we make the slightest mistakes in life but will crucify everyone else as long as we can or until we get enough views.

And for those who claim one issue at a time because that is all they can handle, now that MAC has agreed, now are you all ready to sign petitions and boycott the companies that are creating the environment in Juarez, Mexico?  Are you all ready to blog and Youtube about the companies that are paying $5-7 a day in Juarez and forcing people to work overtime for pennies while you all wear the $50 shoes, watch the $1000 TV or upload videos on the $500 computer that they were paid $5-7 a day to make?  Do your research on that and blog/Youtube on the real issues.

Also while MAC is making donations and creating awareness on different issues what are you doing?  Do you hold workshops on HIV/AIDS awareness?  Do you hold programs and let people know about what is going on in Dafar, Juarez, etc?  Do you blog or youtube about issues like this when it is not a major news story? Or do you just care when it makes you feel better about purchasing that new lipstick, etc?  I do... reason I have less time for Youtube and my blog right now.  Ever since going back to work, I had to give up time on something and my community service was not going to be one of those areas.

I say put your money where your mouth is.  If you expect MAC to donate why not you?  They talked and they did something.  What are you going to do to make a difference?  If everyone signed petitions, boycott, etc and that was it.... nothing would be fully achieved.  Make your donations to these organizations, etc.  Give your time. Don't buy from the companies that are creating the issues in Juarez and similar places until they make conditions better for their workers, women, men and children.  We expect companies, celebrities, and others to always take the moral high road, and do community service, etc. but what about us?  How can we hold standards to companies, and people that we do not even hold for ourselves?  Remember we make up these companies as workers so if we hold them to these standards we should do the same.  Stop making excuses for why you can't.  If you didn't accept MAC and Rodarte excuses why should we accept yours for not doing anything before or after all of this?

MAC, Rodarte and the Controversy

People are up in arms about MAC and Rodarte and jumping on the bandwagon of everyone who has something to say about MAC and Rodarte. But how many are actually doing their research. I am not taking MAC or Rodarte side of the issue or anyone else. What I am doing is my research on the issue. I have never believed in hearsay and too many people in my opinion are listening to hearsay and not doing research on their own. If you ask their followers how long has the problems in Juarez has been occurring many don't know. If you ask them about the issues the women in their communities face they probably don't know either.

I have been involved in community service, women issues, etc. for decades and hate when people “jump on the band wagon” when it becomes newsworthy, etc. But when the news, bloggers, etc. forget about this line of makeup and clothing will they also forget about Juarez? Will their followers also forget? Also how many gave Juarez or any other place like this a thought before MAC and Rodarte decided on this line? How many cared? How many blogged about the issues? How many donated and still are donating to organizations that fight to fix the issues? How many physically get involved by going to the shelters, serving food at the shelters, creating and providing pamphlets to let others know about the issues? How many really give a damn? That is the question we should be asking?!

I have seen comments like...
“This is the reason I have never purchased from MAC and never will!”
“I will never purchase from MAC again!”
“MAC will never get another dime from me, I plan to purchase from MUFE, etc.”

What I don't see a lot of is...
“I plan to give to Amnesty International X dollars because they have been trying to help Juarez for years.”
“I am going to stop purchasing goods from the companies that have the factories there until they make a change!”

Also what about the goods that you purchase from companies that have factories in Juarez and they know of the conditions and are doing nothing about it. Are you still going to support them? Are you still going to buy your favorite jeans or shoes knowing they come from a factory when the conditions and security are not the best, where people are paid less? Or are you going to blog and make YT videos to demand that these companies pay more, improve the conditions and security of the factory areas/transportation, etc before you buy or wear their products. Are you going to try to find out who these companies are and write them to let them know your feelings. If these conditions were occurring in a US city and where you work it would not be tolerated or allowed to continue. So why are these US companies, suppliers, etc. still allowing it to occur in Juarez. etc?  The money invested in these plants and products should also be invested in changing the conditions of the factories and adding more security, but hardly anyone is talking about that. The focus of most blogs, videos, etc have been on MAC and Rodarte. What they did right or wrong made more people aware of the issue but they didn't create the issue.

I am not saying you have to spend your money on MAC or stop spending money with these other companies. I don't advise people on how to spend their money. What I am saying is do your research. Find out where the bloggers, etc. are getting their information. I have written for a newspaper and also have worked in radio and know the facts are what is important. Do we have all the facts or we just listening to the emotions of everyone?

I know many are concerned with the images used also. After researching the line, I found out the images are based on Rodarte's Fall 2010 runway show where the models had a pale look with smokey eyes.

“They will be creating a limited-edition line with inspiration pulled straight from Rodarte's runway looks-- the fall 2010 collection, to be exact. ... we're going to see a lot of pale and nude- lipped combinations, and plenty of smokey eye builders.
MAC has a history with Rodarte, having teamed up backstage since 2006.”

'Rodarte Statement:

"Our makeup collaboration with M·A·C developed from inspirations on a road trip that we took in Texas last year, from El Paso to Marfa.  The ethereal nature of this landscape influenced the creative development and desert palette of the collection. We are truly saddened about injustice in Juarez and it is a very important issue to us. The M·A·C collaboration was intended as a celebration of the beauty of the landscape and people in the areas that we traveled."

Another piece of info I found while researching on the web about the Rodarte collection the MAC line was based on.

“The idea that someone could "be scarred and still beautiful" was the collection's leitmotif, and it was about as far from some banal notion of "tribal fashion" as you could get. ...Forced to scavenge for existence in a barren, war-torn landscape, she pieces together her attire from rags that, as Laura Mulleavy pointed out, only serve to expose her wounds. It's not exactly a good-night story—but it's a powerful one, and it was expertly told to a rapt and ever more adoring audience. “

After doing research and just using common sense I have found beauty in Juarez. There is beauty everywhere. It is not just what you see on the news, etc. I have never been to Juarez or any other city in Mexico but I do know that every city has it's bad and good areas.

Since I have never been to Mexico I can't assume what they did or did not see on their trip and neither can anyone else. I went to China and saw so many beautiful landscapes, buildings, people, etc. but I also saw some disturbing things that you see in most large cities. When I talk about my trip to China, 95% of what I talk about is the beauty of the country and that is what I mainly saw. The same may have been for these sisters who designed this line. When I have family and friends who visit, I don't take them to the worst places in my city. I show them the beauty and wonderful things in my city. We all do. Many of us go on cruises and to resorts on islands and never see the darker side of the place but it is there. When we don't see it is is fine until someone else opens are eyes to it. Until then we are fine at being ignorant to what goes on around us never to do our own research.

I also found this information from a website about Juarez:

"I cannot guarantee your safety in Juarez, Mexico, any more than I could guarantee your safety in Dallas, Texas, Atlanta, Georgia, Chicago, Illinois, or Tokyo, Japan. They are all big cities that undisputedly possess a criminal element. They are also all great cities full of good people and wonderful things to see and do. Use the same precautions you would use in any large metropolitan area.
All we seem to read regarding Ciudad Juárez in the American press, however, centers around crime. While these realities are tragic, especially that of young girls stricken down before their lives have even really begun, it should also be pointed out that this picture of Juárez, which should be the first priority of any journalist.

There is no shortage of serial killers and criminal behavior in any country, but coverage of other cities is more balanced. We get human interest stories, restauant and nightclub reviews, stories about civic events, and interviews with the city's leadership."

Also why do we as US citizens always assume everyone in other countries are so unhappy with their lives there and want to move here.  Like I said there is good and bad everywhere.  With that said it does not take from what has been going on in this town and others like it for years.

I still plan to purchase the items from this collection whether MAC puts them out now or waits 2 months, 3 months or a year because I like the products and MAC is making a donation to a organization to help.  For those who are complaining and plan to take their money to MUFE, NYX, etc. ... How about doing the same thing MAC is doing and donate.  I know I am. I am also in the process of finding out all the companies that use these factories and will be writing and boycotting their products until they make a change for the better.  Throwing money at this town is not going to make a change but getting the companies to improve the conditions of the factories and the surrounding area will be a start.

Milani 3-D Glitzy Glamour Gloss Review

I am a big fan of MAC Dazzleglass.  I love the colors, texture and scent of the gloss.  The price does not bother me either. While checking my subscriptions on YT... I noticed that Pinkpornstar1 had a new review video up on the Milani 3-D Glitzy Glamour Gloss(3-D GGG).  I keep thinking about the glosses because I never picked up MAC Comet Blue Dazzleglass. So on my way home I stopped by Walgreens and picked up the Milani 3-D GGG in Moviestar.  The color is gorgeous and goes well with my red lipsticks.  It is clear blue color and has a creamy texture.

They work just as well as MAC Dazzleglass so far. I plan to purchase more for my kit.  The cost, product size and quality are all great and well worth the purchase.  I am not saying go buy the whole lot, but try one and you just might because these do give MAC DG a run for the money.

The Body Shop Lip Care and Lip Scuff

Lip scuff and lip care are both .14 oz and work great together. I normally apply the scuff 1st and rub my lips together for 30 to 60 seconds. I then remove with a tissue or wipe and apply lip care for soft, sexy lips.
Lip care soften and smoothes your lips with a subtle gloss.  Neither products have an over powering scent or taste.

Lip Scuff contains
  • Crushed fig stone granules help to gently remove dead skin cells.
  • Macadamia nut oil moisturizes while peppermint oil provides a naturally refreshing menthol scent.
  • Moisturizing Community Trade marula oil from Namibia leaves lips soft and supple.
  • Organic Community Trade beeswax from Zambia moisturizes and conditions skin.

Lip care contains:
  • Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps to soften, condition and protect lips.
  • Sunscreens provide a medium level of broad spectrum UVB protection.
  • Mango seed oil, lanolin, lecithin and pathenol moisturize skin.
  • Moisturizing Community Trade marula oil from Namibia helps to repair skin’s moisture barrier and leaves lips soft and supple.

Update

Hey Divas!!!

I am still here.  I am just working hard on the first job(Software Tester) so that I can more happen with the second job(Makeup Artist). Because I have been practicing my skills I have more people asking me to do their makeup and show them how to get the flawless looks they say I have. I wouldn't say my looks are flawless, but I am a perfectionist when it comes many things in my life and makeup is one of them.  When people want to talk makeup with me and improving their skin, I just light up.  I love helping others and being an aspiring MUA is one way I feel I can help people.  I have worked though the years to improve my skin and love what I have done.  Mainly I just make sure I drink plenty of water and avoid pop, etc, but a good skin care regiment does help.  I have been adding more to my MU kit and saving money so I can go to IMATS Toronto 2010.  I can't wait to go and I hope to see many bloggers and Youtubers there.  Maybe we can do a meet up and talk makeup, skincare and haircare. I am ready to go to the workshops and learn as much as I can and do a little shopping.  Shopping is always good. :)

Sugarpill Cosmetics....Fun and Fabulous

Hello My lovely Divas,

New Year, New Products.  A new line of makeup was introduced recently by Amy aka Shrinkle.  Amy is a great clothing designer, great ebay seller, and now has a fabulous makeup line called Sugarpill Cosmetics. I first heard about Amy through Josh aka Petrilude, a great makeup artist on Youtube.

Sugarpill Cosmetics is a new line of loose and pressed eyeshadows, and eyelashes. Sugarpill cosmetics can be purchased at website www.sugarpill.net.  I purchased from the Addicted to Pretty collection the Sweetheart palette which contains Dollipop, Midori, Afterparty and Tako.  Dollipop is a matte, vibrant hot pink and Tako is a matte white.  Midori is a satin like green and Afterparty is a gorgeous satin blue. I also purchased a single eyeshadow in Buttercupcake, a vibrant matte yellow that makes MAC Chrome Yellow look extremely bland.  I love this color.  All the colors have a velvet smooth texture and are very pigmented.  They last all day and I do mean All day.

I also purchased 3 loose shadows in Asylum(red), Junebug(forest green) and Magpie(silky black with metallic blue sheen and turquoise sparkles).  Please go to Sugarpill website for clearer pics.  All are vegan, vibrant and long lasting.  They go on so smooth.  You get 5 grams per jar.  The jars do not have a sifter on it but I prefer to not have the sifters.  I purchased the CatEye lashes and love the fact that on the back of the packaging she has great directions on how to apply the lashes.  The Dewdrop lashes are just as gorgeous.

I purchase Kryolan from Amy and shipping was great so I knew when her line came out shipping would be great. Shipping was fast and great.  $5 flat rate shipping(USA)/ free shipping for orders over $75.  The products were packaged well and the packaging was gorgeous as you can see in the pictures here.  The packaging also list the ingredients in the products. I love the fact that she took the time to perfect her packaging and products.  I love the logo and name also.  Also the logo is sealed on the lids, etc.  The palette is made of a hard cardboard and is heavier than others, but I love it anyway because it looks great, has a magnetic closure, and holds 4-4 gram shadows(larger than MUFE shadows.)  Also the shadows can be removed from the palette.  They are magnetic.  I love that.

I wished I would have purchased more products such as the Burning Heart palette which contains the colors: Flamepoint(matte Orange), Buttercupcake, Love+(Bright red with a semi-pearly sheen), and Poison Plum(Vibrant purple with a semi-pearly sheen).  I also wished I had purchased the other eight loose shadows especially Goldilux and Decora.  Goldilux is the best gold shadow I have seen so far. I plan to purchase some of these items soon.

Overall review:  Great product, packaging, shipping and company.  Plus I received free stickers with my order. I will be purchasing again and can't wait to see the future products she comes out with.  Tutorials to come of some looks I have done with Sugarpill Cosmetics.   Go to www.Sugarpill.net for more information and to purchase this fabulous products.
